  1. Gold-dust.
I don’t think any other book i have is still freighted with so much atmosphere and sense of a time. It’s the perfect embodiment of ‘the dungeon’ for me.
Coming to it with no knowledge of RPGs it filled my mind and unlocked the mystery of role-playing games, which would probably have been years away otherwise.
I can see how if you were already a roleplayer the impact wouldn’t have been so great, later ones were certainly played then mined for scenario encounters.
But the shock of turning the page to the ghoul illustration as the text said its eyes flicked open is something that i can still recall.

  2. I loved these books and I think at one stage I had about 30 of them collected. All gone now unfortunately. Definitely played a formative part in my youth, particularly for those times when a real RPG with DM wasn’t an option.
“Ian Livingstione and Steve Jackson present Steve Jackson’s Scorpion Swamp”… I didn’t understand that title until decades later! Probably still my favourite of the series though, with its free roaming mechanics. Besides the original five, Deathtrap Dungeon is also legendary.
Brilliant pod by the way, I’m still in a timewarp and five years behind but getting there!
