Magic in RPGs (with Stu Horvath) Ep.79

What do we want to Play, Stay or Giveaway when it comes to Magic in RPGs? Stu Horvath adds his thoughts too.

It’s a kind of magic, in RPGs. This time we are joined by Stu Horvath, podcaster (Vintage RPG Podcast) and writer, who talks about his book Monsters, Aliens and Holes in the Ground, which takes us decade by decade through the history of RPGs.

He also contributes to our discussion about magic in RPGs. What would we like to play, stay on our shelves or give away?

  1. Cool guest and good conversation with Blithey. Glad you mentioned DCC which has my favorite magic system, though too time consuming for a big game. Cthulhu’s magic system is fun except it takes days to learn a spell and may not even leave your character with anything but madness. We can all agree that 5th addition is rubbish but I think some of that rubbish was planted in Advanced D&D with it’s many stipulations and time constraints. I am going to add the spell puddle gate to my current game.
If you would like to talk with me about the early days of Basic D&D, Maze of Peril or Caroline Munroe films let me know. My father did some unpaid work for TSR and I visited Gygax in his Hollywood mansion in the 80’s.
