It’s that time again! We went on the road in a charabanc and headed to England’s 4th City, Birmingham, for the UK Game Expo 2023.
We report on the games we played, the people we saw and the stuff we bought in a spectacular weekend.
Learn how we became Pookie Porters carrying his impressive haul, which can be seen revealed on this video.
There is also news from our bar-side chat with Paul Fricker and his podcast recommendation of Filthy Ritual, the true crime podcast. He has also written about it on his substack.
Dirk participated in a panel of fellow podcasters with the RPG Repair Shop. There is an edited sample featured here, but if you want more, then listen at Frankenstein’s RPG.

Hi there! Enjoying the recap. Don’t know how to tell you this…Me and me mate travelled from Manchester…on the train….on the Friday! Trainline said the trains were going to be scrubbed and to cancel (like you said…weeks before) but if you dug deeper…quite a few trains were still running. We took the risk and sure enough found ourselves on an almost empty train, direct to the NEC in time for our first game at half two. Nuts.
*sobs*
Oh my! Just got to the Traveller bit. We were your missing players! We turned up (on time) and the room was like you said…full. It was really weird. My memory is fuzzy but we went to the help desk and they told us it looked like you’d done one or not showed up (I forget exactly). Stood next to us was CJ Romer who I think you might know…he’d had some of his group not show up and knowing him ourselves (and not having a game to join…or so it would seem) from the year before asked if we could join his game. So, we ended up playing a cracking game of Runequest. We were definitely on time and in the right place so I’ve no idea what happened. Funny that I just heard you telling the story of it on your podcast!
